How to Use the TMP Value Formula to Fill Missing Field Values

How to Use the TMP Value Formula to Fill Missing Field Values During Import

The TMP Value formula type allows you to automatically fill empty cells with the most recent non-empty value from above. This feature is especially useful when your import file contains products and their variants listed across multiple rows, but the product name (or another field) appears only once at the start of each group.

Example: File Structure

Suppose your file looks like this:

Example product file with missing product names

In this file:

  • Rows 3 and 4 belong to the same product as row 1.
  • Row 6 is the product that uses the name from row 5.
  • Rows 8 and 9 belong to the same product as row 7.

Instead of manually filling in the missing product names, you can use the TMP Value formula type.

Step 1: Create a TMP Value Custom Field

In the Custom Fields tab, create a new field with the following setup:

  • Field: Product Name
  • Custom Field Name: TMP Product Title
  • Condition: Not empty
  • Formula Type: TMP Value
  • Formula: [Product Name]

Step 2: Assign the TMP Field for Import

Go to the Information tab and select the newly created TMP Product Title field for the “Product Title” import option:

Step 3: How It Works During Import

When the import runs, the system will remember the last non-empty value for the selected field and automatically apply it to all subsequent empty rows until a new value appears.

Example:
If line 1 contains “Ready Fur Tonight Cropped Coat – Black,” that value will be applied to lines 2–4 until a new product name appears on line 5.

This feature ensures your import completes successfully even when your source file omits repetitive values like product titles or SKUs for variants.
